Common PS5 Problems That May Need Hardware Diagnosis
The PlayStation 5 is generally reliable, but problems can develop with power, cooling, HDMI output, controllers and the disc drive.
Some common PS5 problems continue even after basic checks. Repeated shutdowns, no power, no video with multiple displays, or failure to read several known-good discs can indicate an internal hardware fault.
This guide covers several common PS5 problems, basic checks you can try yourself and signs that professional diagnosis may be needed.
PS5 Won’t Turn On
Common symptoms include no power light, beeping without startup or the console turning on briefly and shutting down.
What to check
- Disconnect the power cable and reconnect it securely.
- Try another wall outlet.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB accessories.
- If possible, try Safe Mode by holding the power button until you hear the second beep.
If the PS5 remains completely dead or repeatedly shuts down, the problem may involve the power supply or another internal component.

PS5 Overheating
Signs of overheating can include excessive heat, loud fan noise, warning messages or shutdowns during gaming.
What to check
- Make sure the console has enough airflow.
- Avoid placing it inside a closed cabinet.
- Keep the vents unobstructed.
- Carefully remove visible dust from accessible exterior areas.
The PS5 uses liquid metal on the APU rather than conventional thermal paste. If overheating continues after basic airflow checks, internal cleaning or cooling-system inspection may be needed.

PS5 Controller Not Connecting
If your DualSense controller will not connect:
- connect it to the PS5 using a USB data cable;
- press the PS button;
- reset the controller using the small reset button on the rear;
- try another cable or controller if available.
If another controller works normally, the problem is more likely with the original controller than the console.
PS5 Turns On but Shows No Picture
If the PS5 powers on but the TV shows No Signal or a black screen:
- try another HDMI cable;
- test another HDMI input;
- test another TV or monitor if possible;
- inspect the PS5 HDMI port for visible damage.
A loose, bent or damaged HDMI socket may require repair.

A No Signal message does not automatically mean the HDMI port itself is faulty. Other HDMI-circuit or motherboard faults can also cause no video output.
PS5 Not Reading Discs
If the PS5 does not recognise a game disc:
- inspect the disc for scratches or dirt;
- clean it carefully;
- restart the console;
- test several known-good discs;
- check whether the console accepts and ejects discs normally.
If multiple known-good discs fail, the Blu-ray drive or loading mechanism may need diagnosis.

PS5 Keeps Turning Off While Gaming
Repeated shutdowns can be caused by overheating, power problems or another internal hardware fault.
If the console becomes very hot before shutting down, check airflow and ventilation first.
